Hebrews 10:23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess for He who promised is faithful. (NIV)
James snatched the football out of the air near the ten yard line just as three boys from the opposing youth football team clobbered him to the ground. From under the pile-up, James could still feel the leather in his arms. There was hard dirt underneath him and a bunch of guys on top of him, but the tacklers hadn’t been able to knock the ball out of his grasp on the way down. He smiled as he held the football close to his body, just like his coach had taught him to do.
“Great catch!” his coach said after the game applauding James’ efforts to hold tightly to the ball when the defenders were fighting to knock it out of his grip. “You really held on out there, even when those defenders were coming at you from all directions.”
“I knew I could keep a hold of it if I focused on the ball and not on those big guys coming at me,” replied James. “I just had to concentrate.”
Holding tight to God’s word is kind of like a receiver holding tight to a football. Satan is always sending his helpers our way to try to knock God’s word right out of our grasp. It might be in the form of kids making fun of you for taking your Bible to school, through distractions when you are trying to memorize your Sunday School verse or just being so busy with school and other activities that you stop reading your Bible.
Regardless of what kind of blockers Satan sends your way, it’s important to remember that if you hold tight to the word of God, just like James held tight to the football, there is no way the opposing team can knock it out of your grasp.
