Remind Me Who I Am

“Who do you think you are?” “You are wasting your time.”  “Nobody really thinks you can do this.” “So you are seriously going to tell people you are a writer? HA! Laughable….”

“You know how your kids are struggling with church right now? That’s your fault.”

“That’s your fault.”

“That’s your fault.”

“That’s your fault.”

I’ve been fighting these  and similar phrases for weeks, and their effect on my emotional wellbeing is exhausting. Maybe you are fighting the voices in your head too.  Maybe you know how I feel.

I’m not putting this stuff out there to get pity or so my friends will tell me all kinds of lovely things about myself to make me feel better. I’m putting it out there because it is so DANG real, and so DANG irritating. How powerful words can be when they are stuck on repeat in your head.

Somehow through all the crap floating around in my brain, these lyrics from a song started popping in a couple days ago.

Tell me once again who I am to you.

I didn’t know the name of the song, so I googled the phrase, and found

I’m still fighting ugly thoughts that underscore my insecurities and make my struggles feel like failures.

But I am trying to let the voice of truth linger while I internally karate chop the ugly voice.

I’m the one you love, I’m the one you love, That will be enough, I’m the one you love

I’m the one you love, I’m the one you love, That will be enough, I’m the one you love

I’m the one you love, I’m the one you love, That will be enough, I’m the one you love

I’m the one you love, I’m the one you love, That will be enough, I’m the one you love

  1. I’m right there with you sister–especially on the writing part. Thanks for reminding me who I am.

  2. I love reading what you write, Tori. And I’m excited to spend a couple days with you and see where God takes this book of yours. It is a very encouraging song isn’t it.
